Rain Bird LNK2 vs RC2: Which Wi-Fi Option?
The Rain Bird LNK2 and RC2 both add smartphone control to an irrigation system, but they solve different problems. LNK2 is a plug-in upgrade for a compatible Rain Bird controller. RC2 is a complete irrigation controller with Wi-Fi built in.

Choose LNK2 when your existing controller is compatible
The Rain Bird LNK2 Wi-Fi Module is the economical route when you already own an ESP-TM2, ESP-ME, ESP-ME3, ESP-RZXe or another supported Wi-Fi Ready controller. Look for the Wi-Fi Ready symbol before ordering. The module uses a compatible 2.4 GHz network and enables remote watering, notifications and weather-based features without replacing the controller.
Choose RC2 when you need the complete controller
The Rain Bird RC2 combines an eight-station irrigation controller and Wi-Fi connection in one enclosure. It is better suited to a new installation or replacement where the existing controller is not LNK2 compatible.
What if you need more station choices?
The ESP-TM2 range offers 4, 6, 8 and 12-station models. Add LNK2 when you want app control. This can be useful when eight stations are insufficient or when you prefer familiar on-controller programming with an optional smart upgrade.
Decision checklist
- Check whether the existing controller displays the Wi-Fi Ready symbol.
- Count the irrigation zones or connected valve wires.
- Confirm access to a suitable 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal at the controller.
- Decide whether you are upgrading or replacing the controller.
- Allow spare station capacity if the landscape may expand.
