The Rain Bird ESP-HT2 automates a single garden-tap outlet without controller wiring or solenoid-valve cabling. A good setup starts with a simple watering plan: choose the days, start time and run duration before entering the program.

Before installation

  • Confirm the outdoor tap and fittings are in good condition.
  • Check that system pressure is within the product’s stated range.
  • Install two fresh AA batteries.
  • Connect the timer directly to the tap using its brass inlet.
  • Attach the hose, sprinkler, soaker hose or compatible drip system to the outlet.
  • Do not use the timer in applications outside the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

Plan the schedule

Start by identifying plant type, soil, sprinkler output, season and local watering restrictions. The ESP-HT2 supports seven-day scheduling and up to four start times per day. Multiple starts can help split watering into shorter cycles on slopes or soils where water runs off before soaking in.

Programming sequence

  1. Set the current time and day.
  2. Select the watering days.
  3. Enter the first start time.
  4. Add extra start times only when the same programmed duration should run again.
  5. Set the watering duration.
  6. Return the dial to automatic operation.
  7. Use manual Water Now operation to test flow and connections.

Important start-time tip

A start time begins the complete programmed cycle. It is not normally a separate setting for another garden area because the ESP-HT2 has one controlled outlet. Avoid adding repeated starts accidentally, as this can cause the garden to be watered several times in one day.

Using rain delay

Rain delay pauses scheduled watering temporarily without deleting the program. Use it after rainfall, then allow automatic operation to resume. Continue checking soil moisture because rainfall and plant needs vary across a property.

When should you use a multi-zone controller instead?
