Rain Bird ESP-TM2: 4 vs 6 vs 8 vs 12 Station
Rain Bird ESP-TM2 controllers share the same core programming features, but the number of stations determines how many irrigation zones they can operate. Choosing the right size starts with counting valves—not sprinklers.
What does “station” mean?
A station is an electrical output that normally controls one solenoid valve and one irrigation zone. A lawn containing several sprinklers may use one station if those sprinklers operate from the same valve. Count the active station wires in the existing controller or the valves planned for a new system.
ESP-TM2 station comparison
| Model | Maximum zones | Typical application |
|---|---|---|
| 4 station | 4 | Small lawn and garden systems |
| 6 station | 6 | Medium residential landscapes |
| 8 station | 8 | Larger gardens or expansion capacity |
| 12 station | 12 | Large residential or light-commercial systems |
Should you allow spare stations?
Yes, when future garden beds, drip zones or additional lawn areas are likely. For example, a six-zone system may be better paired with an eight-station controller if two future zones are realistic. More stations do not force you to use them immediately.
